Insurance scheme
After the UK live industry filed legal action against the government for failing to implement an insurance scheme and for not releasing the results of the Events Research Programme, they finally publicly released the data. From the first nine events of the program, 28 of 58,000 COVID-19 cases were detected (paywall).

Countries Abroad See Restrictions Ease

  • Non-essential travel to Europe should be allowed this summer according to the European Union’s recommendation.

  • Full capacity crowds for outdoor events will be allowed in France starting June 30, but events with over 1,000 attendees must utilize health passports.

  • All capacity and social distancing restrictions, including those for indoor venues, have been lifted in Western Australia.

  • Events and festivals in Scotland should see some restrictions lifted in mid-July.

  • While still limited, capacity restrictions for concerts and other events in South Korea have increased. Also, some of the quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated international travellers will ease up next week.

Staffing Shortages Leave Live Events in Limbo

The road to reopening the live industry is still uncertain in the UK due to staffing shortages. The Live Music Industries Venues and Entertainment and the Concert Promoters Association have reached out for government help in filling these positions and for less restrictive immigration restrictions for workers, at least in the short term. Also, door staff for clubs in the UK are lacking, especially because of the new, government-imposed training requirements. Other countries, including the US, are facing similar labor shortages for gigs. Tour bus drivers also seem to be in short supply for a variety of reasons including vaccine requirements, high equipment costs, and people adjusting to life not on the road.

Festival Updates

  • (Norco, California) A full capacity crowd of over 21,000 people gathered for the Boots In The Park festival headlined by Chris Young in mid-June.

  • (Inglewood, California) The new Day Trip Festival, slated for Independence Day weekend, has changed venues to accommodate the surge of ticket sales.

  • (New Orleans, Louisiana) Stevie Nicks, Dead & Company, Jimmy Buffet, Lizzo are just some of the artists to take the stage at the Jazz & Heritage Festival this October.

  • (Okeechobee, Florida) Though Okeechobee will not be returning this year, organizers have announced the dates for March 2022.

  • (Indio, California) Festicket will be the official UK and Europe ticket partner of Coachella Music & Arts Festival according to a new press release.

  • (Derby, United Kingdom) As part of the UK’s Events Research Programme, the Download Festival took place at a slightly reduced capacity of 10,000 people but with no mask or social distancing restrictions. Guests were required to present a negative COVID-19 test upon entering. Results of the event could help shape safety policies and reopen the live industry.

  • (Boom, Belgium) Tomorrowland, which typically hosts 70,000 fans, has officially been cancelled for the second year in a row. Government officials cite COVID-19 safety concerns as cause for the ban.
