Stars, they’re not just like us! International musicians and professional athletes may receive quarantine-free travel privileges in the UK. Plus, new concertgoers are fueling the live music comeback, and the Netherlands has temporarily banned live performances.
Privilege for musicians and athletes
The arts sector in the UK is requesting quarantine-free travel privileges for international musicians as professional athletes. They want people to be able to come and perform without the need to self-isolate upon arrival, so long as they provide a negative test.
Millions of funding
Flymachine, the virtual venue start-up, has raised $21 million of funding from several industry groups like Another Planet Entertainment, as well as individuals like Red Light Management’s founder, Coran Capshaw.
Not fully vaccinated?
Festival staff members in the UK, many of whom have not yet been fully vaccinated, might just turn to deleting the government’s COVID-19 tracing app unless isolation restrictions are eased soon. Otherwise, staffing shortages and even cancellations could become an issue.
New grant program
Austin, Texas has created the Live Music Fund Event Program, a new grant program that seeks to provide resources to independent artists and promoters to put on new virtual and live festivals and events.
Cancelled hours before start
The director of Australia’s Bluesfest, which was cancelled mere hours before it was supposed to start because of one COVID-19 case in the region, believes that tens of millions of dollars were lost as a result.
Concert demand is growing
According to Billboard, the live industry should expect to welcome back not just lifelong fans, but also a lot of first-time concertgoers this season. As shown by the number of major festivals selling out, concert demand is growing as new people seek community experiences.
Official ticketing partner of BSE Global
SeatGeek will become the official ticketing and marketing partner of BSE Global this October, ticketing all Barclays Center events, including concerts, and Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty games. They will implement their online purchasing platform, as well as their mobile app with all its features.
Pivot towards local events
Between the uncertainty of restarting business travel and of the state of COVID-19 in different countries, the international event industry might continue to delay its reopening and pivot towards local events.
PBS's location move
The original Austin City Limits’ skyline is being auctioned off to support PBS’s location move.

Not Back To Business As Usual
COVID reactions around the world:
With COVID-19 cases rising in some places, organizers everywhere are deciding whether to carry on or pump the brakes on reopening following varying infection rates resulting from recent shows. A test concert held in May in Paris with various testing and mask requirements showed zero COVD-19 infections caused by the event. According to organizers of Slovakia’s Pohoda on the Ground, no one tested positive throughout the entire five-day festival earlier this month (paywall). Conversely, 1000 new positive cases have been linked to Verknipt festival, an outdoor music festival in the Netherlands, despite requiring attendees to provide proof of vaccination or a negative test upon entry. Infection rates have increased significantly in the Netherlands over the past week, and lockdown measures have been reinstated, including the banning of live performances. Their festival industry has sued the government because of these restrictions. France, Portugal, and parts of Spain also look to boost mandates. Meanwhile, Scotland and Wales are planning to lift some restrictions soon.
And in the US:
The mayor of Orange County in Florida is recommending the use of masks indoors, and Los Angeles has reinstated an indoor mask mandate regardless of vaccination status. Health officials in New Orleans are concerned about the possible spreading that could be caused by the upcoming festival season, especially with the Delta variant. The Hollywood Bowl has offered some tips for venues to reopen safely. Organizers and fans are all hoping to get back to business soon, but there is still significant uncertainty.
(Novi Sad, Serbia) EXIT Festival became the first major festival in Europe since the pandemic, welcoming 180,000 local and international fans over four days.
(Catalonia, Spain) The Cruïlla, Vida and Canet Rock festivals took place earlier this month taking safety cues from the Love of Lesbian test concert in March (paywall).
(Manchester, Tennessee) Bonnaroo’s lineup for this year will no longer include Lana Del Rey, Janelle Monáe, or King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, but they have added Khruangbin and Rüfüs Du Sol. Travel restrictions or radius clauses could potentially be the cause for the change, but no official explanation has been offered. Deftones has also dropped from the lineup after announcing they’ll postpone all shows until 2022.
(Online) Lorde, Lizzo, Metallica, BTS, The Lumineers, and many more will be performing this September on several different platforms across six continents at the Global Citizen Live 24-hour livestream concert seeking to combat poverty and the negative effects of COVID-19.
(Indio, California) Stagecoach’s 2022 lineup has been announced and features headliners, Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Combs.
(Orlando, Florida) EDC Orlando has released their 10th anniversary lineup featuring some of the most popular electronic music artists in the world, such as Kaskade, Excision, Zedd, Galantis, and Kygo.
