Live Nation and Ticketmaster are called out by the U.S. Senate, while other ticketing companies around the world continue to be bullish in 2022. SXSW returned in person and attendance results seemed to vary, but if you wanted to learn about NFTs, it was the place to be.

Following their growth as a company, Roundrock is expanding service offerings by providing fully managed event IT, comprehensive network solutions, and more, and have revealed plans to enter the world of esports. 

Snoop's NFTEver since Snoop Dogg bought Death Row Records, landmark albums have been pulled from streaming services, including Dr. Dre’s The Chronic and Snoop’s own Doggystyle. He has committed to transforming the brand and catalog into “an NFT label,” recently releasing Death Row Mix: Vol 1 as an NFT on Web3 music startup Sound XYZ. 

Green Indoor VenueScotland’s largest indoor entertainment venue, OVO Hydro, is attempting to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Although 100% of the venue’s electricity already comes from renewable sources, Glasgow’s Scottish Event Campus (SEC) says energy strategy will be key, calling for actions around water efficiency, supply chain management, and green travel.

Spotify Sponsorship Spotify has announced a long-term partnership with FC Barcelona, revealing a new name for the team’s stadium: Spotify Camp Nou (previously Camp Nou). The naming rights came as part of their reportedly $306 million deal, which will also include Spotify-sponsored team jerseys for the men’s and women’s teams in the 2022-23 season.

$6 Million ProjectAdelaide’s new 1,800-capacity venue, Hindley Street Music Hall, in Australia is set to open in August. The $6 million project will include a nightclub and restaurant and is spearheaded by Live Nation, Secret Sounds, and Five Four Entertainment, along with other teams. Serving as Venue Director and co-owner will be Powderfinger bassist John “JC” Collins.

Portsmouth Guildhall, a 2,000-capacity venue based in Portsmouth, England, will be

Eventim UK to become the venue’s new ticketing partner. The event hall will transition this summer toward using Eventim’s software and integrated marketing solution. 

LN Called Out By SenatorsSenators Richard Blumenthal and Amy Klobuchar are calling out Live Nation’s position in the live entertainment industry and urging the Department of Justice to investigate their alleged monopoly. In their letter to Jonathan Kanter, Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division, they said, “We write to urge the Department to investigate the state of competition in the live entertainment and ticketing industry, including any potential anticompetitive and anti-consumer actions by Live Nation, and to take action, as appropriate, to enforce the antitrust laws and restore competition to these important markets.

LIB LineupLife is Beautiful is returning September 16-18 in Las Vegas, with headliners Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, and Jack Harlow, among others. After acquiring a majority stake in the festival last month, this will be Rolling Stone’s first time holding the festival under its ownership.  

Danny Wimmer Presents...Bourbon & Beyond is returning September 15-18 at the Highland Festival Ground in Kentucky’s Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. Run by Danny Wimmer Presents, this music, and food (and bourbon) festival will be extended to four days for the first time and features Stevie Nicks, Lenny Kravitz, and others yet to be announced. 

South Park + Red RocksTV show South Park is nearing its 25th anniversary and, to celebrate, Comedy Central is hosting a concert in Colorado’s Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre. The event is set for August 10, which will be almost 25 years to the day after the show’s first episode. Show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker will make appearances, along with the bands Primus and Ween.

Reflecting on the company’s full-year financial results, the chief executive of Vivid Seats, Stan Chia, looks back on 2021 as a “comeback year.” The online ticket marketplace posted revenues of $443 million from 2021, as compared to $35 million in 2020. Their net loss also improved, going from $774 million in 2020 to $19 million by the end of 2021. Vivid’s adjusted EBITDA amounted to $109 million, and their marketplace Gross Order Value (GOV) equated to $2.4 billion. This positive financial growth ensues after both the return of live events following Covid and multiple business deals and acquisitions.

A new report from Million Insights has predicted that, by 2028, the global music events ticket market will total $18.17 billion, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 18.4%. This growth is expected due to the rising popularity of music artists around the world. For more predicted industry stats, read here

Due to growing demand from their 6.5 million users across 36 countries, Dutch ticketing company TicketSwap is expanding its presence throughout Europe and Latin America, opening new offices and creating international partnerships with music festivals, event promoters, and venues.

SXSW, which took place IN PERSON from March 11-20, had a supposed 20% decrease in attendance from their 2019 levels, as reported on March 15. There were also NFTs everywhere; companies of all kinds presented NFT-themed exhibits and hosted panels and workshops, all discussing how to create and store customized NFTs. The musical portion of the event showcased 1,400 artists on 79 stages, including Shawn Mendes, Dolly Parton, and Young Thug.  The full list of performers can be found here

Producer and songwriter Linda Perry is working with philanthropist Alisha Ballard for EqualizeHer, an initiative launched at SXSW that attempts to bring gender equity to the music industry. Through March 15-16 at SXSW, EqualizeHer hosted immersive educational programs, panels from industry leaders, interviews with musicians, and live performances. Perry and Ballard also encouraged industry members to join the EqualizeHer pledge, a commitment for industry professionals to foster opportunities and raise awareness for women entering the live event industry. Perry tells Rolling Stone, “Alisha and I (and so many others) share in this passion to create a more equitable music business across all aspects of the music industry... EqualizeHer is a mission to educate, inspire, empower, and create opportunities for women.”
