DDP Scholarship AwardedAlexandra Maynard is the first recipient of the Leon Jackson Memorial Scholarship, which will help her attend the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt. The scholarship was created by Disco Donnie Presents and is named for Leon Jackson, the late music and event promoter who helped to bring live electronic music to Nashville.

Green EffortsIn the US, the Green Operations & Advanced Leadership (GOAL) program has been created to give venues a roadmap, tracking, and resources focused on sustainability to guide them toward more sustainable practices. In Mexico, UK-based A Greener Festival (AGF) is providing a “Cultura Circular Toolkit” to provide 30 Mexican festivals with training on developing sustainable festivals.

Country Star PassingLegendary country star Loretta Lynn passed away last Tuesday at 90. The Country Music Hall of Famer was the first woman ever to win Entertainer of the Year at both the CMAs (1972) and the ACMs (1975). 

Lizzo’s Magic FlutesLizzo played James Madison’s 1813 crystal flute during her Washington, DC concert - the first person ever to do so. Additionally, the flutist filed several trademark applications for her signature “Sasha Flute” across several categories, including NFTs, virtual environments, animated TV programs and movies, toys, clothing and accessories, and more. 

Courtroom ChatterCA Governor Newsom signed the ‘Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act,’ (a similar act exists in NY), preventing prosecutors from entering rap lyrics as evidence. Elton John is taking part in the lawsuit accusing Daily Mail of “gross breaches of privacy” along with Prince Harry, Elizabeth Hurley, and others. Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off lawsuit from 2017 continues with her lawyers stating that plaintiffs signed away their rights to sue when they signed their publishing deals.

Tour Cancellations While 2020 was the year of the Covid Cancelation, 2022 is shaping up to be the year of the Everything Else Cancelation. The list of artists and tours ending their seasons early continues to grow:

  • Animal Collective cancels European tour (economic reasons)

  • Lindsey Buckingham cancels European dates (ongoing health issues)

  • Ed Sheeran cancels New Zealand February 1 show (“ongoing uncertainties with global touring”) - though his February 2 show at the same venue is still on as scheduled

  • Rage Against the Machine cancels 2023 tour (Zack de la Rocha torn Achilles tendon)

  • Justin Bieber postpones Justice World Tour until 2023 (prioritizing health)
