COVID vaccine passport for cultural eventsGovernments of Italy, France, Belgium, and the UK have all implemented some type of COVID vaccine passport for cultural events (paywall). These passes continued to be debated, with artists like Eric Clapton refusing to play gigs where they would be required (paywall). 

Invitation requirement removed Clubhouse, the audio social media app, has removed the invitation requirement for new users and will be adding people on the waitlist in waves.

20,000 fully vaccinated attendeesThe world’s largest test concert since the pandemic will be held in Quebec in September with 20,000 fully vaccinated attendees (paywall).

Nightclubs came to life againAll COVID restrictions were lifted in England on July 19, and the nightclubs came to life again on what they’re calling ‘freedom day.’

‘Super spreader’ eventWill sponsorship deals be affected by the infection rate of events? Magners, a Cider company, is allegedly refusing to pay the sponsorship money to the Cheltenham Festival in the UK that was held in March 2020, because it is assumed to be a ‘super spreader’ event (paywall).

$30 million raised by LiveControl$30 million has been raised by LiveControl, a livestream production company, to create a “plug and play” livestream option for venues looking to hop on the streaming bandwagon and increase revenue.

Festival updates

 (Chicago, Illinois) Despite rising COVID cases in the city, Lollapalooza will go on with officials confident in the safety procedures in place.

 (London, England) All Points East will go on in late August with an increased capacity. Attendees will be required to use the government’s NHS Covid Pass. 

 (Mansfield, Ohio) After selling out in record time, a limited number of additional GA tickets have been added for Inkcarceration Festival this September.

 (Hartford, Connecticut) For the first time since 2018, Farm Aid will be returning this September. Performers include Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and more.

 (Monetery, California) The Monterey Jazz Festival, slated for September, sold out in just six days, but will be held at 50% capacity.

 (Moreno Valley, California) The War On Drugs, Kamasi Washington, Toro y Moi will be performing at the in-person Desert Daze festival in November.

 (Melbourne, Australia) Following the lockdown of the country’s four largest cities, the BIGSOUND music festival and conference has been cancelled for this year.

 (Somerset, England) Glastonbury’s mini one-day event, Equinox, slated for September has been called off for a “number of reasons.” Glastonbury was one of the first major festivals to cancel for this year.

 (Hasselt, Belgium) Originally slated for August, Pukkelpop has officially been cancelled for this year because of new government COVID restrictions (paywall).

Hey Back of House readers, 

This is Claudia Stoops, and I’m our Associate Editor here at Back of House. I’m currently a college student from Michigan, but over the past two weeks I traveled down to Miami to work as the Event Operations Catering Assistant at Rolling Loud. Jessie, our Co-founder and CEO, was also here working as the Front of House Operations Manager. I’d attended many shows and festivals before the pandemic, but Rolling Loud has been my first experience on the other side. So I wanted to take the opportunity to talk with some of the many talented event professionals I’ve met… 

Q: How did you start and how long have you been working in live events?

Julie Daly (BOH Ops Manager): “I’ve been doing this for about ten years now. I went to school in New York for fashion business management, and after one internship, I decided it was not for me. So my last summer before senior year, I had to choose my big internshi, and I knew I wanted to try something else. It turned out, through a family connection, I was able to get an internship with Bonnaroo. So I worked with Superfly for about five or six years. That’s really how I first got into this. The first festival I did was one they had in New York called The Great GoogaMooga Festival. My second was Bonnaroo, which was kind of surreal as a 21-year-old. I was sold and I’ve been here since.”

Q: Why did you start working live events?

Anya Billeck (VIP Ops): “I really like the environment around live shows… it was the only thing that clicked and I wanted to do something that made me happy where I felt like I belonged.”
